The chain of survival describes the six steps rescuers must take to save the life of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest outside the hospital. It begins with the quick actions from bystanders and paramedics to recognize cardiac arrest and call 911, perform CPR, and use an AED to restart the heart. From there, the paramedics give advanced resuscitation, and the hospital staff provides post-cardiac arrest care. Lastly, the survivor works together with doctors and nurses, physical therapists, dietitians, personal trainers, therapists, religious leaders, and especially family and friends to create a plan for recovery.
Preparing for Emergency Situations
The best way to prepare for an emergency situation with cardiac arrest is to take a class that provides training in recognizing cardiac arrest, performing CPR and using an AED. Knowing what to do will help you to stay calm in the midst of a stressful situation. However, a lay person without training can do CPR and use an AED to revive a cardiac arrest victim, especially with coaching from the 911 dispatcher. Watch the videos from Zoll Medical below to get an overview of these two lifesaving therapies, and then find an online or in-person training course to attend.
